With all of the science and technology available today, why on earth are companies that make personal care products still using animals to test new product formulations? Is it the budget, greed, not caring, lack of ethics, government regulations or the lack of them, the cost of alternative testing types?
A quick google search of 'personal care product, or hair care, cosmetics, etc., tested on animals in 2017' will provide you with a surprising list of companies that are still doing animal testing. Some are even based right here in the USA!
Knowing if a company tests on animals is something I've always sought to be informed of, so I could avoid using, recommending, or selling those lines. I've even dropped lines in a hot second when they were purchased by a corporation or conglomerate that doesn't care about animals, or when a company had changed their testing practices on their own. This is one reason I avoid large publicly held corporations. These types of companies are driven by margin and stock price. The shareholder always is priority #1 in a public company. Do all large, public corps use animal testing? No, but I have found that small, privately held or family owned companies are able to keep making choices based in ethics and social responsibility. You know what company isn't listed in the hair care group? MINE! We have never tested products, or formulations on innocent animals.
Why do companies still test on animals? There are many reasons I suppose, and many companies have abandoned the practice for other models. The entire practice of animal testing has been banned in the EU. Sadly, China still requires testing on animals of products imported and sold into China. Instead of rewriting all the info, I'd like to provide you with a link to an article done by Allure magazine in October or 2017 Here is an article from Allure that speaks to it well.
